All about the PTO: New here?

Hi! We are so glad you're here! We know it can be intimidating to walk into your first PTO meeting and you have absolutely no idea what is going on! We have all been in your shoes, so we have created this little cheat sheet to hopefully help you feel more at home here. Whether this is your 1st or 50th meeting, you are a valued member here and your input matters! Thanks for joining us. :)

PTO Meeting Info

Our meetings typically follow the same format each time. We will have an agenda prepared for the topics of discussion and the outline of the meeting. We will start by going over the minutes from the prior month's meeting and the budget, we will listen to new business requests, a grade level team will present information about the things they are seeing with their students, we will go over any upcoming events and volunteer needs, and we will vote on business requests. The language that we use can feel unfamiliar if you've never been to a meeting, so we have put together a list of terms, how to vote and the way to phrase your statements for your benefit.

PTO Meeting Jargon

Minutes
notes from the prior month's meeting
Encumbered
funds in the budget that are reserved, promised or pending for a certain item
Business request
a request submitted to us by staff or community member for use of PTO funds for a specific purpose
Motion
a formal proposal to the group. When approving a motion it should be stated as follows: “I (your name here) move to approve this request.”
Seconding
agreeing to a motion. When seconding a motion it should be stated as follows: “I (your name here) second this request.”

PTO Voting Guidelines

We want the business requests we approve to benefit majority of the students at Midway. If we feel a request is too narrow (specific class benefit, grade level, etc.) we may decide to vote no on the request. Asking questions to the person who put forth the request is encouraged! If we are unsure of how to vote or have further questions that are unable to be answered, we may table the request for the next meeting until we gather more information. We will hear all business requests during the meeting and will vote at the end once the person who has made the request has left (that way we don't feel any pressure to vote a certain way).

PTO FAQs

Can my kids come to the meetings?
Absolutely. They can sit with you or they can play, we have someone designated to provide childcare during the meetings.
Do I have to attend every meeting?
No! We get that life happens, but we would love to have you whenever you are able. Even if it's halfway through the year and you've never been before.
Do I have to volunteer?
Absolutely not. We have a number of events that we love volunteers to help us with, but you are not required to volunteer in any capacity. If you do want to volunteer you can sign up with us right here on our website.
Who can vote?
Any one in attendance can vote, even if you don't fully understand what is being asked or what the norm is for business requests.

Meet Midway Elementary's PTO Board

I'm a busy mom of 4. This will be our family's 6th year at Midway and we love it! Midway has a wonderful community of families and staff that work together to make Midway the best school for learning and fun. This is my 3rd year serving on the PTO board. I decided to jump in a few years ago to help support our staff & students. I've loved getting to know our staff well, help in the classrooms, plan events, and raise funds to help our students learn and have fun.

I have 4 crazy kids. This is only my 2nd year with a kiddo in school, so I am brand new to this! I used to teach Kindergarten and know the value that comes from parents and teachers working together. I am passionate about making learning accessible to all students, supporting teachers, and creating fun community events where we can all come together. My goal is to have more families be involved in the PTO to help make Midway an even better place.

I am a proud mom of 3 incredible girls. My husband and I are newer to the Midway community, and we have absolutely loved becoming a part of it! One of my favorite things is volunteering at school events and getting to see our Midway Sharks have fun, make memories, and learn something new, whether it's about the world around them or about themselves. I'm looking forward to a wonderful year and am so excited to help support our students, teachers, staff, and Midway families. Go Sharks!

I'm so excited to be a part of the Mead community, and especially proud to be a Midway Shark! I began my teaching career in Cheney, moved to Colfax, and am now here. Reading has always been a passion of mine, and I love helping students become confident, capable readers. Outside of school I enjoy spending time with my 4 grandchildren & my husband of 32 years. We love hiking, pickleball, cribbage, traveling, and being active in our church. I love sourdough baking, gardening, and learning more about the dyslexic brain. I look forward to serving on the PTO.

I am excited to be a part of the PTO board this year. I am a mom of 2 wonderful kids, one here at Midway now and one who was a Shark last year. Midway has been a wonderful experience for us and I have enjoyed getting to know teachers and students through events and activities. I can't wait for all the fun we will have this year!

I joined the PTO board because I'm passionate about our school and community. I look forward to helping raise funds and finding community sponsors so our students can have the best education and fun this year!

I'm excited to support both the PTO Board and the Midway staff by helping keep communication and information flowing between the two. I'm also a 5th grade teacher and a proud mom of two amazing teenagers who are both former Midway Sharks. I'm looking forward to working with everyone and helping make this a great year for our Midway community!
